What Does Cymraeg Mean? The Welsh Word for the Welsh Language

Cymraeg means the Welsh language. It is the word Welsh speakers use for Welsh itself. If Cymru means Wales, then Cymraeg means Welsh — specifically the language.

The two words look similar, which is why people sometimes mix them up. The easiest way to remember it is simple:

  • Cymru = Wales
  • Cymraeg = the Welsh language

Is Cymraeg the same as Cymru?

No. Cymru is the country; Cymraeg is the language. They are closely related words, but they are not interchangeable.

If you see Croeso i Gymru, that means “Welcome to Wales”. If you see a course described as Dysgu Cymraeg, that means learning Welsh.

That distinction also explains why official Welsh-language material uses both words regularly. Welsh Government terminology lists Cymraeg as “Welsh” when referring to the language, while Cymru is used for Wales and in many Welsh national titles.

Why does Cymru sometimes become Gymru?

This is where Welsh grammar can catch English speakers out. Welsh uses initial consonant mutations, meaning the first letter of a word can change depending on the words around it.

So Cymru can become Gymru in a phrase such as Croeso i Gymru. It is still Wales. The grammar has changed the first letter; the country has not changed its name.

We explain that in more detail in our guide to why Wales is called Cymru.

Is Welsh still spoken today?

Very much so. Cymraeg is a living language used in homes, schools, workplaces, broadcasting, public services and everyday life. You see it on road signs across Wales and hear it in communities throughout the country.

That is worth stressing because Welsh is sometimes treated outside Wales as though it belongs mainly to history books. It does not. The language has ancient roots, but modern Cymraeg belongs to the present as much as the past.

Why does the word Cymraeg matter?

Language is one of the quickest ways people recognise home. A place name, a familiar phrase or a few words heard in the right accent can do more than a flag or a tourist slogan ever could.

For Welsh speakers, Cymraeg is simply the ordinary name of their language. For people learning it, returning to it or living away from Wales, the word can carry something more personal: identity, family and connection.

Cymraeg in Welsh identity

Welsh identity is broader than language alone, and not every Welsh person speaks Welsh. But Cymraeg remains one of the most distinctive parts of Wales. It shapes place names, songs, literature, sport, humour and the way the country presents itself.

That is why Laughing Wear uses genuine Welsh words and references rather than generic “Celtic” filler. If a design is meant to represent Wales, it should feel connected to the place.
